Copy of #COVID19 and its Impact of the Film Industry

Even though James Gunn has recently said that two of his movies (Guardians of the Galaxy 3 & Suicide Squad) will not be delayed by the coronavirus that has quickly crippled the world economy, there have been far more announcements of film productions being delayed (some for a considerable amount of time). At my last count, there have been 54 productions halted or delayed.

The economic impact is obvious. The big question is how the film industry will be affected in the future. Since the advent of streaming services, there is no doubt that there have been less people walking into brick and mortar movie theaters to take in the big screen experience. From Netflix to Quibi to the traditional movie houses, overall film content has been churning out at incredible rates.

This means that theaters most likely will be the hardest hit during this crisis because they were already at war with the streamers. Do I think theaters will die out? There may be some smaller theaters unable to weather this storm, but I believe many of the larger theater chains will remain leaving them to perhaps reconsider their business strategies moving forward.

Remember to support your smaller, independent theaters.
